Gardening Workshop Series

~An Introduction to Gardening Throughout the Seasons~
One Sunday every month at the Squamish Public Library!
Dress for the weather-part of the session may be outside at the neighbouring community garden.
The workshop is by donation, with all funds going back to Squamish CAN for continuing our community programming. No one will be turned away for lack of funds.
This is part of a nine-month gardening workshop series put on bySquamish CAN (Climate Action Network) and the Squamish Public Library, instructed by gardening guru Barb Hinde. Generously funded by Vancouver Coastal Health, and with in-kind support from the Squamish Public Library/District of Squamish.

•February 18: Gardening Workshop Series: Garden Planning and Seed Selection
This will cover planning your garden for the upcoming growing season. Topics will include selecting your garden site, how to interpret a seed catalogue and ordering the seeds that suit you the best.
•March 18: Gardening Workshop Series: Growing Your Own Starts
Instead of buying plants already started, why not grow your own? This workshop will guide you through the process and set you up for success.
•April 22: Gardening Workshop Series: Early Outdoor Planting
Ready to get your hands dirty? We will cover what to plant at this time of year, how to grow more weather sensitive plants and what to watch for in plant development.
•May 20: Gardening Workshop Series: Soil Health & Amendments
This coincides with April’s workshop in that it will cover how to look at the plant`s growth, detect what is missing in that growth and how to augment the soil to improve growth.
•June 17: Gardening Workshop Series: Watering, Fertilizing, & Mulching
As the weather warms, watering becomes an important part of plant growth. The focus this month will be on proper watering practices, how and when to fertilize and mulch.
•July 15: Gardening Workshop Series: Specific Growing Issues (Q&A Session)
This session will mostly be a Q&A. An opportunity to ask questions as to why plants are doing what they are doing and a solution on how to rectify the problem.
•August 19: Gardening Workshop Series: Winter Planting & Harvesting Prep
This session will cover what plants do well for fall and winter plantings and when and how to plant them. Cold frames, harvesting, and vegetable storage tips.
•September 16: Gardening Workshop Series: Garden Cleanup & Winter Planting
As the season winds down, this session will cover what winter crops to plant, if you choose and how and when to best get this plants ready for winter.
•October 21: Gardening Workshop Series: Putting the Garden to Bed for Winter
Almost time to put your feet up. This session will discuss how and why it is necessary to tuck the garden into bed for the winter.
About the instructor, Barb Hinde:
• Herbalist
• Wild plant forager
• Retired certified grower
• Been growing edible and medicinal plants forever
• Fourth generation farmer, focusing on growing own food for immediate consumption and preserving
• Strong believer in local and sustainable food
• Strong believer in working in conjunction with nature
• All round plant geek
Hosted on traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) Nation.
The library is wheelchair accessible, as is the community garden but it does have wood chip paths.
